Saturday
Nestled on Scotland’s northeast coast, Stonehaven is a seaside town that is full of charm and character. With its picturesque harbour, dramatic cliffside views, and the brooding ruins of Dunnottar Castle looming nearby, this historic gem feels like something straight out of a storybook. Think Lymington on the south coast.

Inverbervie
We continue our journey today, as we do most days, as we are only stopping at sites for 1 night most of the time. We have a very short hop to our next destination, which is Stonehaven, only 46 miles away, just south of Aberdeen. Only a snack for brekkie today as we need to eat some of the food we bought with us, so we are stopping for lunch en-route. Nikki’s in the driving seat, and as she drives like a grandad it will no doubt take us most of the day to reach it !
Forfar is a bit inland, so we head up the A90 for a bit before hanging a right back over to the coast, skirting around Montrose. We decide to stop for lunch in Inverbervie, because the car park on the beach is large enough to accommodate the ‘beast’ according to reviews. Indeed it was, although the only place we could park it was next to the bins as the car park doubles as a recycling centre, and it was also ‘bring your garden waste’ day today so there was a steady stream of cars dropping this off to a bin lorry. Not quite the enchanting beach side stop we had in mind. On the plus side we could recycle our tonic and lemonade mixers from last nights gins !
We had a lovely lunch though, first time putting the kettle on en-route. This is certainly part of the charm of this all, being able to stop wherever you want and having everything you need right at hand.
Rainy arrival
On arrival in Stonehaven just after 3pm, we find the site full, with only our pre-booked pitch free, thank god we booked all the sites ! It’s about 100ft from the beach, and we thought we would probably go for a stroll, but about 10 mins after we arrived it started raining, and then it rained and rained and rained, finally stopping around 6pm ! Steve took the opportunity for a Lucy – what we call an afternoon nap.
Evening
Fortunately the evening was fine, so we wandered out to find somewhere to eat. Walking along the promenade we asked a couple of what we hoped were locals for any suggestions. They suggested two, both at the harbour, The Ship Inn and the Marine Hotel. We settled on the Ship Inn and had a lovely dinner Moules et Frites for Steve and haddock and chips for Nikki. We also popped into the Marine Hotel for ‘one for the road’ before walking back thru town, which was quite lively and …. only to find the “Best Fish and Chip shop in Scotland 2020” which also happens to be the birthplace of the deep fried Mars bar. Steve was forbidden …..
We both cannot get over walking from a pub at 10.15 at night and it still being light.

Lovely to see your smiling faces ☺️
Did ye get a mars bar I would have had to try one 😁
My view exactly, but I was forbidden! By the time my point was made, and Nikki relented, I had lost all entusiasm.
