Tuesday Evening
When we started our research, it became clear that driving 400+ miles to get to Scotland in a single day, having never driven anything as large as a motor home, would be foolhardy. We decided to break our journey in Durham, just over half way.
Anticipating that, after a long drive, setting up ‘the beast’ for our first night would have been a bit much, we booked a hotel – Bowburn Hall.

Bit of a fright
One of the reasons we picked the hotel was that it boasted a very large car park so we were horrified on arrival to find an indeed huge car park choc-a-block full, with cars even parked outside on the pavements. Turned out they had over 100 people attending a conference, which by a quirk of fate, finished 10 minutes after our arrival and following their mass exodus there was barely a car in the place and we managed to park next to the front door!
Durham centre
After a quick bag drop, an Uber took us to the city centre. Durham was lovely and in a way we wished we had more time there. It obviously relies on University students, because it is packed with bars and restaurants. We tried to get Student Discount, but unfortunately Nikki’s obvious age put a block on that.
We managed to hit 3 hostelries though – Market Tavern; Drunken Duck and the Woodman Inn. The latter astonished Steve as it served drinks he hadn’t seen for 30 years – Courage Directors and Mackeson. Both of course were imbibed and led to some journeys down memory lane about other drinks of yore. Unfortunately, Steve couldn’t get NIkki a Brandy and Babycham, or a Snowball.
Uber back to hotel for dinner, Steve chose their ‘famous’ mince on mashed potato with leek suet pudding. There is a reason it was their signature dish – it was amazing. Nikki had steak and kidney suet pudding, which was also brilliant.
All in all a fantastic first day.
