Thursday

Today we leave Skye. We are sad to go, as it’s been brilliant especially our accommodation. Our destination is Glencoe, which feels like the sort of place that epitomises Scotland – a long deep valley surrounded by mountains, a vast loch, lots of fast running boulder strewn streams and rivers. We just need some mist and the swirl of bagpipes to complete the picture!

Farewell Skye

On the drive out we stopped at a viewpoint we have been meaning to go to since we arrived – An Leth-Allt. It afforded an amazing view of some waterfalls from a viewing platform, and also a food van, where Nikki got a coffee to kick-start her day.

Onwards then back through Portree and over the Sky Bridge. Also past Eilean Donan Castle, for the third time, making it our most visited place on our trip LOL.

Hello Glencoe

It was a bit of a schlep today, 124 miles, just under 4 hours, but the going was easy and we made good time.

We planned a mid journey break for a late lunch as we were unsure of where we could eat in Glencoe. We picked Spean Bridge to  stop at its ‘Mill’, assuming it would be some sort of watermill, but it turned out to be a re-branded Edinburgh Woollen Mill, not really our kind of place, although on the positive, their car park was large enough to accomodate us.

This did lead us to discover the Old Station Restaurant which was an unexpected delight with Steve choosing Chicken Balmoral (breast of chicken stuffed with haggis in a peppercorn sauce) and with Nikki not straying too far from her meal of choice the “…” Burger (replace … with name of restaurant).

Our route took us past Ben Nevis, which neither of us could pin point and onto Fort William. Our inability to identify Ben Nevis reminded Nikki of her trip to Snowdonia with Michelle, where we had to ask someone which ‘hill’ was Mount Snowdon. Only Scafell Pike to misidentify now !

On arrival at Glencoe we were greeted by one of the site team, who proceeded to cycle in front of us to show us which pitches were available. Once again, we are at the foot of mountains, with yet more amazing views.

A quiet night in tonight, during which Nikki realised she had run out of Holsten Pils!  Enough said.

Wake up following morning and zero midge bites found. Yay!

Tour of Scottish Coast

Nikki calls this our big adventure. The original plan was to take 3 months and do the coast of England, Scotland and Wales.  But, we’ve reigned ourselves in a bit, and decided to start with just Scotland.

While Steve’s idea was to hire a 2-seater convertible sports car, with Nikki doing a Grace Kelly impression, going from hotel to hotel, Nikki’s dream was to do this in a motorhome.  A motorhome it is then!

These are the stories of our 4 week tour.
